Summary of the NAVLE Process

Updated April 20, 2010

Listed below is a simplified summary checklist of the NAVLE process. The NAVLE process is outlined, in detail, on the NAVLE Information and Application page.

NAVLE Process Checklist

Two applications are required for the NAVLE.

1.   Submit the NBVME NAVLE application and pay the corresponding fee, by the application deadline date. You must provide a reliable e-mail address on your application form.

  • If you are applying for NAVLE approval through the Canadian National Examining Board (NEB), the Puerto Rico Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners, or the Wyoming Board of Veterinary Medicine, you must submit the NBVME application and payment directly to the board (not to the NBVME), by the board's application deadline date.

  • All other candidates may submit their NBVME NAVLE application directly to the NBVME, either on-line or by paper. Deadline for receipt of application in the NBVME office is August 1 for the November-December NAVLE, and January 3 for the April NAVLE.

2.  Submit a state/territorial NAVLE application through one licensing board only and pay the board's application fee, by their deadline date.

  • You must be approved by a licensing board in order to be eligible to take the NAVLE.

  • Contact the licensing board office where you want a license to practice veterinary medicine and request their NAVLE application packet. Complete and return the licensing board's application for NAVLE approval (including all required suppporting documentation and fees), according to their specific application requirements, and before their application deadline.
    • For the 2010-2011 NAVLE, the NBVME will process state NAVLE applications on behalf of the following state boards: Colorado, Florida, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, Vermont and Virginia. If you are applying for NAVLE approval through one of these states, additional information is available on this site by clicking here.

3.   If you have completed steps 1 and 2 above and are approved to take the NAVLE by your licensing board, a Scheduling Permit will be issued for you approximately 45 days prior to the start of the testing window. You will be sent an e-mail message with instructions on how to access and download your Permit on-line. Print your Permit prior to your test date, because you will need it with you for entrance into the testing center on the day you take your NAVLE. Permits can not be printed at the testing center, and the NBVME will not provide a faxed copy.

4.   Schedule your testing appointment through Prometric as soon as you download and print your Scheduling Permit, in order to get the date and center you prefer. You can locate a testing center at www.prometric.com. When scheduling your appointment, record your Prometric confirmation number on the bottom of your Permit in the designated space provided.

5.   Contact Prometric to confirm your testing appointment one week prior to your testing date, using the confirmation number issued by Prometric when you originally scheduled your appointment.

6.   Arrive at the testing center 30 minutes prior to your appointment with your non-expired government-issued photo identification AND your printed NAVLE Scheduling Permit. You will not be admitted without them.

7.   NAVLE scores will be reported to the licensing board through which you applied. The licensing board will report your scores to you. For the 2010-2011 NAVLE, the NBVME will report scores for candidates approved through: Colorado, Florida, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, Vermont and Virginia.

8.   Once you have passed the NAVLE, if you need your scores transferred to additional licensing boards contact the American Association of Veterinary State Boards or visit the AAVSB web site at: www.aavsb.org to request an official score transfer
